Forget the fab four, think the fab 12. For the next 12 weeks, it’s quiz time again and this time, I will be testing your knowledge of British beetles. Many beetles have metallic or iridescent coloured elytra and thorax, making them - the real shining stars of the show. Beetles can live in a wide range of habitats. Some can fly and others cannot. Some have long antennae, and others long legs. Some have even mastered the art of disguise! Prepared to be be(et)dazzled and if you’re feeling lucky, perhaps you can even guess the bonus quiz question!Magical mystery beetle quiz #9Clue: Almost a golf legend.Bonus quiz: Worm serve known root.

Another early answer as I am out of the office on Friday and Monday.Congratulations to all of you who guessed Wood tiger beetle (Cicindela sylvatica). First a bit about the clues. First clue: Almost a golf legend. Tiger Woods is the well known American golf ace, without the ‘s’ at the end of Wood and the two words transposed, this almost spells out Tiger’s name. Second clue: Tony’s timber. Tony was the name of the Frosties cereal, cartoon tiger. Timber refers to wood.
With two pale spots to the rear of their purplish elytra, Wood tiger beetles can grow up to 2cm. Found throughout May and September in open pine woods, this species of tiger beetle has undergone significant decline over the last 40 years and their main stronghold is now in parts of Dorset and Surrey. The Wood tiger beetle is the largest to the tiger beetles.
A picture of a Wood tiger beetle can be found here.
Did you know: the Wood tiger beetle is also known as Heath tiger beetle.
Bonus quiz answer: Tomorrow never knows. 1966, Revolver.
Keep an eye out for next week’s mystery beetle quiz here soon!
Take care,
Claire
