Congratulations to all of you who guessed Cocksfoot grass (Dactylis glomerata). Let’s start with the clues! First clue: Nothing would chew on this. ‘Nothing’ is the name of the cat which belonged to the French philosopher and playwright Jean-Paul Satre. Also known as Catgrass plant (as cats eat it) Cocksfoot grass is not only beneficial for shifting those troublesome fur balls, but also thanks to some useful vitamins, helps maintain a glossy coat and spruce whiskers! The second clue: Make sure you don’t step in something foul. You take steps with your feet and foul is a word play on ‘fowl’, which refers to chickens and (cock)erels.
Found in woodlands and meadows and along roadsides, Cocksfoot is a perennial grass found throughout the UK. It was introduced to North America and New Zealand. Flowering between May and September, Cocksfoot grass has distinct triangle-shaped flower-heads which are purple tinged (redder in full sun) and tufted. Cocksfoot grass can grow up to 140 cm in height and its grey-green leaves reach 20-50 cm in length. Cocksfoot is also called Orchard grass and is occasionally used for hay or as a forage grass for cattle.
A picture of Cocksfoot grass is found here.
Did you know that: Cocksfoot grass is a popular food plant for the caterpillars of butterflies such as the Meadow brown and Gatekeeper.
