Once again, it’s time for MrsT’s quizzes to branch out and spread their roots, and this round... you’ve guessed it, its trees! They help regulate our climate and provide food and shelter for a whole host of animals as well as providing us with a variety of resources, we might otherwise take for granted. Let’s face it, what wood (pun intended) the world be without trees? They come in all shapes and sizes, as do the leaves and fruit that they bare and yes, I was one of those kids who loved the school trip to Westonbirt Arboretum. For the next 12 weeks, I will leaf you with a clue or two about trees for you to mulch over.EnjoyMYSTERY TREE QUIZ #5Clue: If I blossom too soon, Iris pines yeast.
Hello,
a very vague first idea: How about "Holly"? The leaves are a bit stitchy (pines could be an anagram for spine). The plant contains saponins (soap makes foam, and yeast can be associated with beer, that also has foam on top). For "Iris" I have no idea.
I am curious for the results.
Bente
Well done on getting the ball rolling Bente, and top marks for your train of thought.......
Eekkkkk…… I now have a long list of flowering trees and failing to tie anything in as yet -

Yersinia pestis (aka Iris pines yeast)is a particularly nasty microbe which causes Bubonic Plague as well as other fatal problems!! Fail to see how it is connected to a tree - like B's idea of Holly, at least it's festive!

Lol Wendy! I 'discovered' that microbe too!
As for the tree, I'm impressed with Bente's suggestion! As ever, I'm puzzled!

Another tough one from MrsT. Very clever of you to work out the anagram, Wendy.
There are a number of trees that flower early (before they leaf). Blackthorn, as Ray has mentioned, Wych Elm and Willow amongst them.
Some random thinking, Yersinia pestis = Plague = fever. Grey Willow is the source of aspirin and has been used to treat ailments (including fever) since ancient times.
Probably on the wrong track as usual.
