Ive been having a play with haiku over the last couple of weeks (during a bout of man flu!) and I thought I'd throw a couple of my efforts out here for your perusal. For those unfamiliar with the format it's a non-rhyming 3-line poem with five, seven, five syllables. I love the challenge of creating a broad picture on such a narrow canvas.

Clever stuff Ian, not easy to achieve!

It's not easy is it Wendy, I have a friend in NZ that tried to educate me in Haiku writing a few years ago, she would put hers on the back of envelopes (as we were still writing letters back then) just to cheer up the postmen she said! Well done Seaman, those are really good.
Lot to learn
Hi Ian, hope you have now recovered from your bout of flu and I see you came up with an interesting challenge for yourself ! Although I've heard of Haiku I didn't know exactly what it entailed and your poems are really clever. I can't compete with your genius as I'm still need to count on my fingers lol but purely for fun .......... and I hope its 5, 7, 5 !!!
Dawns awakening
Birds beginning to chatter
Get bird feeders out !

Hi all thanks for your kind feedback. I'm much better thanks Hazel and have been out today around Old Moor for the first time in weeks. I do like your effort but beware - it's addictive. You'll be walking around, see something and a line will pop into your head! Which is fine except for the next ten minutes you'll find yourself searching for the other two lol.
lol Ian ! It's a good job I didn't see this post before I ventured out to Deeside nature reserve eary this morning or I may have missed the fleeting fly by from a Hen Harrier lol As you say, it could become quite addictive but always good to keep the grey matter working !
It certainly does that Hazel. And that's no bad thing at my age!
Nice work Ian :-) Perhaps we should have a haiku of the month thread....
"Let loose the Kraken!"
Haiku of the month
siskins on feeders
visions in black yellow green
a joy to behold

drum roll in the woods
great spotted announces spring
with gusto and joy

All at once it seems to me

Great work. I love the haiku.Such compact imagery and the bonus of the pondering after-effects!
