Hi everyone,
Today we had our first ever visitor inside our bird box! So exciting . However the box has a 25 mm or 26 mm protector plate fitted which is for Blue Tits, but I am sure this is a Great Tit that visited. It did seem to struggle to get in. (I shall try to upload a video.)
My question is should I change the protection plate to a 28 mm as I think this bird has been looking for a few weeks now and only today finally got in.
Thank you all in advance.
As there is no nest yet, and assuming you want to have a great tit nest, I would quickly remove the plate. I wouldn’t spend time changing plates til after breeding season is over. There is a risk that only one of the pair will fit as things stand. Not terminal, but has happened locally here.
Thank you so much. My mistake, my husband went out to check and it is a 28mm plate that is on there, the 25mm is on the other box!
So hopefully all is good. Hope they like our box enough to make a nest this year. That would be so exciting
