Whilst walking the dogs along the canal in Ashford, I saw what looked to be a large bird of prey with large yellow beak sitting on a fence post. Unfortunately the pics aren’t the best as it was fairly far away and I only had my iPhone. Can anyone identify this magnificent bird?
Looks like a buzzard to me but please wait for others more experienced than me ;-)
(Pardon the Scottish Accent)
Buzzard.
Much larger than a buzzard and has an almost black tail. We have lots of buzzards around our property and this bird is different. The beak is large & protrudes significantly, unlike a buzzard.
Looks almost the height of the fence post! Immature white tailed eagle looks a poss based on what can be made out.
Yep it's a buzzard, we have one in our scrub land .
I think its a buzzard we have 3 of them very similar
I'd also say, Buzard. If the fence is smaller than we assume it might be making ti look bigger than it actually is.
Yes it's a buzzard and to be even more specific I think it's a Buteo lineatus.

Sorry, but no.
I am all for percentages. I'm also more than willing to accept it's a common buzzard (buteo buteo).
However, the talon appears to be the entire width of the post and overhang. The bill appears to be very large and yellow. Hard to make out, but the eye appears to be yellowy on my screen. The gaps between wires appear less than half the height of the bird (what livestock is it aimed at keeping in?). The bramble patch, which you can typically expect to be 5ft+ doesn't appear that much bigger than the bird (though obviously the bottom part of it is out of sight). Yes, the post also is hidden at the base, but the size of bird to height of post can roughly be judged by the gap in the wires.
More than happy to close off as common buzzard and accept the photo is extremely misleading. Can only i.d. what the photo is appearing to suggest....and certainly not clear cut to me.
