This morning I saw a Great Tit with a small stick in its beak. I thought it was collecting nesting material but I watched for over 5 minutes as it poked and prodded in the ground under leaves. It appeared as if it was using this as a beak extension, possibly looking for grubs or similar. Has anybody observed this behaviour with a bird like Great Tit? I have seen programs about how clever corvids are hut never a small bird.
