Bird nest in my loft

We have some birds (my guess is starlings) which have found their way into our roof space.  I have located their entry hole which I wish to close up so that this issue can be resolved.  When is it likely to be safe to close the hole so as not to trap any of the birds?  The bedrooms below are not regularly used so it is not a case of simply listening for activity.

  • Hi Kim...as breeding season has already begun and am guessing the starlings have already began building their nest it would be unlawful to close the entry hole until breeding season has finished (end of August) and all young have fledged. Starlings are one of our birds that are actually in decline :-(

  • Hi,

Is it literally a case of the birds getting into the roof space, or just getting into the soffit area? Nests are often in the latter and birds in those cases don't get into the roof itself and aren't a nuisance (especially if the rooms adjacent/below are unoccupied).

If birds genuinely are getting into the roof space, i.e amongst the rafters, water tank etc, at this stage of the year, check there isn't a nest. Assuming not, plug the hole from inside the roof. You'll know when the birds aren't there as you'll be there.

I strongly suspect though that isn't the case. In which case, I needed have added to Linda's response.
