Advice in Devon

Hi,

Looking for advice on creating a swift nesting colony whilst renovating a house in Torquay, Devon. I've tried to make contact with Stephen Fittt through the swift conservation organisation as he is listed as the contact for Devon bu the website link to him doesn't work.

Does anyone know how to get hold of him?  I am currently in Exeter and I know he has some association with the City Council re their Swift Tower.

I'd love some advice from him as I have lots of potential to help swifts in my property whilst I have building work in progress.

I am also putting up House Martin and Swallow boxes.

  • Hello Martin, I can't help with your question but wanted to say, you may want to change your user name from your private email address, with this being an open site you may end up with a lot of unwanted mail etc. To do this, go to the top of the page and click the wee circle top right, go into profile and down the right you will see, edit profile, click that and you can put whatever name you want into the box, then save profile. Apologies if you know how to do this already.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

    Catlady,

Thanks for the advice and help. Slightly concerned about your username though - a cat amongst pigeons!!!

  • Sorry no one has got back to you. IMO best to contact swift conservation directly. They were fine last year when I contacted them re my swift nest.

Re your Torquay renovation, just my opinion, but it's probably best to focus on any species that occurs there first. Swifts, swallows and house martins, as you probably know, have totally different requirements for nest sites as well as feeding opportunities and habitats. Does your location provide all those? There is some evidence that house martins and swifts compete. Not had it here, but that is probably, or partly, due to low numbers of each, so paths rarely cross around nest sites.
