Invertrevretes in the garden this afternoon

  • Zo, that goose isn't wild and from that photo, despite it having a slight white behind the bill, it doesn't look 100% white fronted anyway. Some other species can have a small amount of white behind the bill and of course, they can cross breed sometimes. The wild white fronted geese are, or at least were, usually top left of that map. e.g. Zeiss hide looking NW. Almost all wildfowl in that central area on the map is collection birds, not wild ones. There will of course be small wild birds, e.g. martins flying over and moorhens foraging. The best places to see wild birds, as well as Zeiss hide, are South Lake, Holden Tower, and the pair Robbie Garnett and Martin Smith hides. The latter ones tend to be the best place for snipe & green sandpipers for example. Things like spoonbill (if/when they're there) and common tern, are most likely seen at South Lake.

Yes that came to me after commented. I don’t usually label something unless It’s either a likely identification or 100 percent certain identification so  I should of kept it at goose or something like I did originally before going to species like I usually do sometimes if necessary. The sight of the goose didn’t last long cause I was mainly  looking at the other 2 birds as I walked along and got ready to take a photo before the goose popped up at the same time so i only got a brief glimpse of the goose but cause we couldn’t hang around long on there on the bridge if we also wanted to visit everywhere else aswell I took a photo of the 2 birds but tryed to catch the goose at the last minute when it appeared at the last minute so mananged to capture the goose between the 2 birds the second it apeared at the last minute aswell to look at it properly later. I didn’t really get a chance to go through all my photos properly after Friday. But I usually do that before adding and labelling to my posts. I was tired after the trip so skipped that. I was hoping to get a chance to go through them properly at the weekend but I didn’t. Thanks for letting me know though. Interestingly I was opposite one of the places you mentioned on a few occasions at some point. I don’t know what the part is called where iv seen geese that looked like the white fronted geese a few years ago but if I were to go to slimbridge I would recognise that part from that time. Cause I got a membership I can go more often. Usually I just go round the place and look around and visit some places I missed rather than just going to specific parts places I might of missed last time. Last time Before this one I missed the eider gate and never thought to go into the observatory tower so I visited some parts I didn’t go before aswell as the parts I have been to. Iv missed some of the hides you mentioned that are on the map. Even with a map it can be hard to find places cause it’s so big and there’s different paths and alternative paths to different places aswell as the same paths. I like to be quiet adventurous rather than follow a map all the time even though they are helpful sometimes. But I do like useing maps sometimes so do use them sometimes I find at slimbridge Sometimes it can be fun to see what’s there even without a map. . I will visit some places I couldn’t find or missed like the ones you mentioned next time I go there again. Slimbridge are doing wildlife photography seassions which I asked about when I was there And got the number for the reception from the lady so that one of the people in the house can phone them up and get details about it from them.

  • Managed to catch a cold during Easter weekend I didn’t know weather it was definitely one or not or if I was just under the weather until Tuesday morning. I’m trying to take it easy cause iv got a cold. I had a Covid test cause someone in the house didn’t know if it was Covid manifesting itself as cold symptoms or a genuine cold but like usual It came out negative. So it’s just a head cold. In spite of my cold Im still going out in the garden to look for birds, insects and invertrebetes and looking after them and the wildflowers but trying not to go out for long if it’s cold. At the moment the weather is abit on and off. I don’t know when I might go to slimbridge next but when I do I will check out those hides. I find some hides are better than others. There is a section called goose of the world where white fronted geese can be found aparantly so not sure if it’s (still) the case that there found when you last saw them or not but wildlife don’t really have boundaries so even though they can be found there they can turn up anywhere. Of course there might not be much point looking for white fronted geese next time if they have already left but will look out for other notable birds
