Hope everyone is well and safe at this rather unusual time!
We have some gardening works happening in our area today and this includes trimming an evergreen in the neighbouring garden. I saw a couple of collared doves hang out near this tree and fly in and out a few times over the weekend. I was wondering how to tell if they have begun making a nest? It's too dense to really see into it. How often would the birds need to fly in and out? It's possible that they were just visiting after all but if they are indeed making a nest, I would like to inform the tree workers. If I don't see the birds for over an hour, is it safe to assume that they are settling elsewhere?
Thanks!

My Niece has a nesting pair in her large Bay tree, there are changeovers but the birds tend to sit for long periods of incubation!
Have you seen this? ...

There's a pair nesting in our holly tree, they are in and out quite a bit, though not sat & timed them. Trouble is, they can get in and out from all directions, so you can't always tell. Only real answer is to try and peer inside. How do they behave to other birds? Our two are aggressively seeing off any hapless pigeon who wanders past, that's a good indication they've set up home

Good point, thank you. I've not seen them all morning, so I think they did not settle after all. I will tell the workers to take a look just in case.

I don't know the answer to your question (!) But, I would inform the tree workers there is a nest and perhaps they would take extra care anyway, can't hurt.
