Should i clean my nest box?

My great tit chicks fledged a couple of days ago and the parents have left. Sadly there is a dead chick and an unhatched egg left behind. Should I clean the nest out in the hope that another bird may nest in the box this Spring? I'd hate to miss out on the chance to have another brood in my nest box but wouldn't want to spread disease. Thanks! Caroline

  • No, do not clean out the box just now, leave well alone. This is done in the autumn, before winter, as some birds actually use boxes to roost in, on cold wet, windy nights. It is a shame about the chick and unhatched egg, but sadly that is nature.
