Blue Tits nesting in box question

I have had some blue tits nesting in a box I put up in autumn

It seems very successful as birds have been coming and going since the beginning of April.

How long do broods last?

Today I noticed that a parent seems to be going back and forth (possibly with food for its young). I understand Blue Tits only have one brood so activity since early April seems a long time? Any explanation would be welcome.

Thanks

Nick

  • Any blue tit enthusiasts out there that can help?
  • Hello Nick, I will try to help. Blue tits will lay up to 14 eggs, once the last egg is laid she will sit up on them for around 15 days before hatching, then the young will stay in the nest for up to 3 weeks, getting bigger and stronger before they leave the nest. You will see them perching around for a few weeks after that.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

  • Hello Cat Lady

Thank you for the reply. This will explain the length of time the birds have been visiting the box. They should be ready to fledge soon so fingers crossed I'll get to see the new birds on the block!

    Best wishes
