Woodpeckers

Do we have Pileated Woodpeckers (mainly black with a red punk like head dress) in the UK. A friend thinks he had one in his Berkshire garden ?

    The answer is no! Our 3 species of Woodpeckers in the UK are Green Woodpecker, Great Spotted Woodpecker and Lesser Spotted Woodpecker. Also Woodpeckers don't migrate across Ocean's or the sea!

    Unless it escaped from an exotics collection, the chances are very low. Pileated woodpeckers are huge so he'd definitely not be confused if he saw one! Perhaps a local woody was showing off its red crest :) Or he may even have one with minimal spotting, which can happen sometimes. If he sees it again maybe he can share a pic.
