How to maintain a clean fence?

Hi all and a happy new year. So we are starting to think about garden tasks for the year ahead and thought it is in need of a good spring clean. Obviously you are limited as to how clean you can keep your garden when feeding garden birds but does anyone have any tips or tricks on cleaning bird mess off a fence without taking all of the paint off? We gave it a good scrub with a brush and soapy water last summer and luckily it needed re-painting anyway. We have 4 bird-friendly hedge plants growing which will eventually cover a good chunk of the fence but I'm still concerned about maintaining good hygiene. So any tips would be greatly appreciated!
